Techo International Airport (TIA), set to open in July 2025, represents Cambodia's boldest infrastructure project to date and promises to transform the nation's connectivity, tourism potential, and economic landscape. This comprehensive overview explores the key features of this landmark development.

A World-Class Aviation Hub
Located approximately 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh in Kandal and Takeo provinces, the $1.5 billion facility spans an impressive 2,600 hectares. Currently over 94% complete, TIA is classified as a Category 4F airport—capable of accommodating the world's largest commercial aircraft, including the Boeing 747-800 and Airbus A380-800.
The airport's development follows an ambitious three-phase plan:
Phase 1: A 4-kilometer runway serving over 15 million passengers annually by 2030
Phase 2: Expanded capacity for 30 million passengers by 2050
Phase 3: Final expansion to accommodate 45-50 million passengers, potentially making it the ninth-largest airport globally
"Techo International Airport will be a crucial infrastructure development, positioning Cambodia as a competitive player in the regional and global aviation sectors," noted Charles Vann, director of Cambodia Airport Investment Corporation (CAIC).
Architectural Excellence Meets Cultural Heritage
Designed by renowned British firm Foster + Partners, the airport's architecture beautifully blends contemporary design with traditional Cambodian influences. The terminal features an overarching roof canopy—a lightweight steel grid shell that filters natural daylight while protecting visitors from tropical weather conditions.
Two airfoil-shaped piers define the terminal's shape, converging toward a central head house containing security, immigration, and retail elements. The design incorporates structural timber "trees" supporting the roof and integrates lush tropical greenery throughout the facility.
Pioneering Sustainability Initiatives
TIA aims to set new standards for environmental responsibility in aviation. The ambitious "GreenSky" project includes:
On-site solar farm expected to reduce electricity consumption by 20%
Vertical gardens and rooftop greenery
Indigenous plant species improving air quality
A botanical garden showcasing Cambodia's biodiversity
Rainwater harvesting and waste reduction measures
Economic Impact and Development
The airport represents more than just improved air travel—it's a catalyst for national economic development. With approximately 15,400 staff currently employed in construction (90% being Cambodian nationals), TIA is already generating significant employment.
Once operational, the airport will create thousands of permanent jobs across sectors including aviation, hospitality, retail, and logistics. The surrounding area is planned for development as an Airport City Special Economic Zone, attracting further investment and business opportunities.
The Future Takes Flight
As Cambodia prepares for this monumental infrastructure milestone, Techo International Airport stands as a symbol of the nation's ambition and progress. When the first aircraft touches down in July 2025, it will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Cambodia's development—connecting this rapidly evolving Southeast Asian nation more closely with the global community.
